The colour is medium gold. On the nose, pear, coconut and banana, accompanied by a faintly toasted, honeyed nuance that adds depth to the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is fresh and savoury. The texture is pleasantly rounded. The finish is marked by a pronounced salinity, reminiscent of sea spray.
Frei Gigante is produced by Pico Wines, or more precisely the Adega Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico, the island’s oldest and largest wine cooperative, founded in 1949. Pico is one of the islands of the Azores archipelago, an autonomous region of Portugal located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The wine takes its name from Frei Pedro Gigante, the Franciscan friar traditionally credited with bringing the first vines to Pico during the island’s early colonisation.
This wine is a blend of three indigenous Azorean grape varieties: Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico. Arinto dos Açores is prized for its naturally high acidity and freshness, making it particularly well suited to Pico’s cool, windy maritime climate. Verdelho contributes more aromatic richness and ripe fruit character, while Terrantez do Pico is a rarer local variety that adds texture, subtle complexity and depth to the blend.
Pico Island offers an extraordinary viticultural environment where vines are planted in small plots protected from the Atlantic winds by hand-built basalt walls known as currais. These stone enclosures are one of the defining features of Pico’s vineyard landscape and help protect the vines from wind and sea spray. The vineyard landscape of Pico is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
For the 2021 vintage, the grapes underwent controlled fermentation in stainless-steel tanks, followed by six to nine months of ageing on the lees, contributing texture while preserving the wine’s characteristic freshness.
What makes Frei Gigante particularly interesting is its uniqueness. Its personality comes from acidity, salinity and the combination of indigenous varieties adapted to Pico’s harsh maritime climate. For me, the attraction of wines such as Frei Gigante is less about the pleasure it delivers than about its sense of place.
I got this bottle as a gift from my father, who visited the Azores last year. It sells for around 22–23 EUR.
