Seraia 2022

The colour is deep ruby. On the nose, ripe plum, black cherry, with subtle citrus and balsamic notes. In the mouth, medium-bodied, smooth, and fruit-forward, with soft tannins. The finish is simple yet pleasant, though not particularly long.

This wine is produced by Cantina Due Palme using Malvasia Nera grapes from Salento in Puglia.

Founded in 1989, Cantine Due Palme is a cooperative that brought together local growers with the aim of elevating the reputation of southern Puglia’s wines. At a time when the region was still largely associated with bulk production, it focused on quality, modern cellar practices, and the valorization of indigenous grapes, such as Negroamaro, Primitivo, and Malvasia Nera. Over the years, it has become one of the symbolic producers of Salento, helping shift the region’s identity toward bottled, quality-driven wines.

Malvasia Nera is a group of the darker-skinned members of the greater Malvasia grape family. Despite sharing the “Malvasia” name with aromatic white grapes, it is distinct and primarily used in blends.

Its origins are linked to the broader Malvasia family, likely introduced to southern Italy through ancient Mediterranean trade routes, possibly during Greek or Venetian influence. Over centuries, it adapted to the hot, dry climate of Salento.

On its own, it tends to produce lighter, more delicate wines. In blends, it plays a crucial balancing role, bringing elegance to the robust character typical of the region.

I bought this bottle in Monopoli for 7.90 EUR, while walking from Benevento to Brindisi to complete My Way from Canterbury to Jerusalem.
